Intro

Sustainability begins with respect for the natural environment and respect in our relationships with others. This means taking responsibility for the effects caused by the activities of an organization. Sustainability therefore covers a multitude of topics and requires the collaboration of multiple stakeholders. An organization can, in the process, even contribute to a positive impact. A product or service offers then  a concrete response to a societal challenge. In this approach of "shared value" the result translates into added value for the organization and society. It is the management’s vision, the sector, the  activities, the impacts and the stakeholders that define whether an organization focuses on responsibility, “shared value”, or both.

What does “Sustenuto” mean in this framework?

The name Sustenuto comes from the Italian musical term sostenuto and means 'supported'. With the sostenuto pedal of the piano one can sustain notes while continuing to play the melody. For Sustenuto this symbolically represents the growth process that leads to full integration of sustainability within an organization. This requires continuous attention and is strategic in nature.

Current societal challenges require to adopt new ways of thinking and doing. Sustainability allows each organization to create value. Within the organization, throughout the supply chain and in the society. The survival of an organization depends on its ability to make the most of a changing environment. This involves the development of sustainable products and services, innovative business models and active dialogue with stakeholders. Our values

There are two core values at Sustenuto: responsibility and respect. They represent the heart of sustainability. Sustenuto lives according to these values ​​every day, as an organization, but also in collaboration with its partners and in its work with clients.Concretely, it means to take responsibility for all the impacts of all decisions and activities undertaken. Both in the direct sphere of influence - namely to customers, partners and colleagues – but also towards society.Respect is expressed by equal treatment of any person or party involved, regardless of the difference in terms of identity or opinion.Responsibility and respect in our view, are important components of a strong leadership. It is by integration of societal interests that one can develop a strategy supported by all and that will produce effective results.

Be it for an initial approach of sustainability to a strategic application social responsibility, you have come to the right place. Our coaches are experienced professionals with a passion for sustainable development and social responsibility. They worked for several years on issues of sustainability at companies but also at public entities. They offer a balanced overview of what social responsibility is thanks to their multidisciplinary trainings. It ranges from applied Economics, to political and social science, to engineering, to product development and to communication sciences. They put your challenges into an international perspective through their training and work experience abroad. Together they speak several languages: English, French and Dutch.

The Sustainable Growth Model makes visible and applicable what the essence of sustainability for your organization means. Our office

Sustenuto is located in The Conference House in Brussels. This place, which is devoted to sustainable development and social responsibility, is also home to other organizations active in these areas. The Conference House integrates various facets of sustainability in its design and in its operational work:

Artist in the House

The background pictures are part of Florian Müller’s “Essence” collection.  By nature, Florian is what one can call a passionate, driven by the search of a conceptual representation of the world. His photographic concept “Essence” strongly embraces the idea of going back to the basics, to the “Essence” of things. As a strategy consultant in CSR and sustainable development, we use concepts and abstractions as an essential part in our coaching process. In our own way, we live our work as a kind of art that ‘in fine’ brings organisations to their “Essence”. 

Core Team

Dirk Le Roy

Dirk Le Roy is the founder and director of Sustenuto. He feels in his element coaching  members of the management teams of large companies and in his collaboration with public entities and knowledge centres. He excels in the analysis and is participative and results-oriented in nature. He accompanied the first Belgian SR Learning Network "Business and Sustainable Development" of the King Baudouin Foundation. He has an extensive experience in working with local and federal entities, with the European Commission, the World Bank and European business schools. Dirk is a bio-engineer by training, he has completed various training abroad and earned an MBA from the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. Until 2005, he was director of the environmental consultancy Ecolas, which received several years the price of the Trends Gazelles. At that time he also sat on the steering committee of Business & Society Belgium. Dirk is also the founder of the Cradle to Cradle Platform and administrator at Plan C, the transition platform for sustainable materials management, and at Café de Fiennes, the sustainability Hub.

Koen Vanbrabant

Koen Vanbrabantdoes coaching on the development and implementation of sustainability strategies. He excels in finding the sustainability themes relevant to an organization and in translating them into actions and results. He has worked with major companies in the Belgian food and textile industry, and has accompanied many SMEs active in the profit and non-profit, and social sector. As a corporate social responsibility advisor at the Federal level and at the Flemish Community, he has developed a good overview of what is and how social responsibility works for public entities. He graduated in Applied Economics with a specialization in business economics and strategy (KUL). He also obtained a Masters in International Development (University of Bath). Before dedicating his career to the field of sustainability, he gained experience in the financial sector and has given courses in higher education.

Gil Stevens

Gil Stevens coaches organizations in the implementation of Cradle to Cradle in their product development, new business models and spatial development. He also does the guidance to Cradle to Cradle certification and is responsible for the network of Cradle to Cradle companies in Belgium. Gil followed an intensive Cradle to Cradle internship at EPEA in Hamburg and is a certified facilitator of OVAM SIS Toolkit. He obtained in 2009 a Master of Product Development at the Hogeschool Antwerpen and in 2010 a master's degree in Environmental Science at the Universiteit van Antwerpen. He has worked on product innovations for Beta Fence and Esselte commissioned by the leading design bureau Achilles Associates. As a product engineer at Theuma he led the development of new products.

Kristof Debrabandere

Kristof Debrabandere is an experienced CR professional and coach. He is passionate about integrating corporate responsibility in business strategies that benefit both society and the company's bottom-line, now and in the future. He has extensive innovation and business development experience in industry: he has worked and lived in Belgium, UK and Mexico. In addition, he has worked with the environmental NGO Bond Beter Leefmilieu as policy advisor on sustainable materials & transition management. Subsequently, he worked as sustainability manager at multinational companies. Kristof is an industrial engineer in chemistry, with a Master and PhD in polymer technology.

Benoît Simonart

Benoit Simonart is a dynamic and engaged coach, accompanying companies in mainstreaming sustainability in their corporate strategy and culture, with as objective to improve business performances while positively impacting the environment and the well-being of people. He is convinced that this approach is a source of value creation and a competitive advantage.

Benoît combines an engineer background with business management, marketing and leadership skills. His specific knowledge in sustainability covers the development of integrated programs, from strategy formulation to implementation and addressing topics like innovation in products and processes, stakeholder’s engagement, partnerships, communication and reporting. 

Benoît is Civil Engineer UCL and owns a master degree in Industrial Management from the KUL. He has developed a strong corporate experience in the telecom, energy and logistic sectors. Recently, he has been active as senior advisor sustainability and CSR program manager. He has a participative coaching style, is results oriented, analytical and positive thinker.

PROJECTS

Albatros, the first CSR scan

Albatros is one of the first full fledged self evaluation tools for companies, developed for large and small companies of all sectors. Using the build-in questionnaire, you can assess how your company deals with economic, social and ecological aspects. The result of the assessment gives an overview of the strong and weak points of entrepreneurship from a sustainability perspective. Recommendations are given how to improve. Sustenuto worked together with Ethibel (Vigeo) and developed the tool commissioned by the Flemish Community. Over 2000 companies used it since. Only available in Dutch. 

CSR scan for the temporary employment sector

The temporary employment sector plays a central role in the labor market and would also like to fully include  its societal role in this position. Therefore, the social partners in the temporary employment sector took the commitment to promote mainstreaming of CSR in their sector.   Specifically the Training Fund for Temporary Workers took along with its partners (De Punt, Plus Uitzendkrachten, Randstad, T-interim en Z-staffing) the initiative to develop a CSR scan (online tool) completely tailored to the temporary employment sector. Temporary employment agencies can use this tool in an accessible way to review their own CSR policy and prepare relevant actions. These actions are aimed both at its own permanent staff, as well as to temporary workers. Sustenuto was asked to assist the social partners in the finalization of this tool.

CSR in telecom

Sustenuto guides Mobistar in preparing a CSR action plan, specifically targeting strategic philanthropy. Mobistar wants to support community projects that are in line with the core business of communication. This guidance relates to decisions on governance, the establishment of criteria for the selection of partnerships and the involvement of employees.

50 countries in action and dialogue

Kauri, emerging from the north-south political agenda, connects companies , NGO's and multiple other stakeholders to a true cooperative CSR network (www.kauri.be). In the framework of a project for the Flemish Agency on Trade (Flanders Investment & Trade), Kauri and Sustenuto worked together to create insight in sustainability in those countries where FIT is represented, going from Sweden to Iran, from Argentina to China. This work concerned as well CSR initiatives in those countries, as existing CSR networks and the governmental viewpoint on CSR. This lead to the publication ‘Sustainable International Trade. 50 countries in action and dialogue’.

CSR in food

Sustenuto helps Spadel since 2010 in the development and implementation of their sustainability strategy. Sustainability is one of the three main anchors of Spadel . Milestones in the cooperation are the development of a vision and goals for 2020 (Spadel Sustainability Strategy), the establishment of a balanced scorecard , implementing and managing eight sustainability platforms. Sustainability is included in product innovation with the integration of natural ingredients in soft drinks, its also implies an ambitious carbon footprint reduction with the ultimate ambition of neutrality in 2020 , a proactive HR policy through the label “Great Place to Work”, providing a CSR bonus and reviewing the internal financial guidelines for sustainability investments . In 2013 Spadel was recognized by the European Business Awards as one of the top ten European companies in the category "Environment and Sustainable Development". Marc du Bois was nominated the same year as manager of the year by Trends Tendances.                       

Sokratest, self-evaluation for pro-active talent management

SOKRATEST is an online self evaluation tool for companies and HR-managers of every organisation. Starting point of this tool is that investing in talent is worthwhile for the sustainable future of your organisation. SOKRATEST consists of 8 modules, going from vision on talent, searching talent, welcoming talent, strenthening talent, diversity, motivation, engaging and retention of talent. The link is made between the efforts that are taken on HR and how these efforts contribute to achieving company goals. SOKRATEST consists in 2 versions, one for large companies and SME's and one for smaller, family companies. Sokratest was a cooperative development chaired by the City of Gent, coached by Sustenuto and in participation with a diverse set of stakeholders such as unions and the local chamber of commerce.

Federal CSR Framework

In the framework of the implementation of the Federal Plan for Sustainable Development 2004-2008 some 50 stakeholders were interviewed. Employers, trade unions, NGOs, government, consumer representatives, they all give their input on the draft of the Belgian Framework for CSR. Sustenuto also provides workshops with stakeholders that establishes the Federal Action Plan for CSR.

European benchmark CSR courses

Sustenuto executed a thorough  benchmark on CSR courses in six European countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, United Kingdom and the Netherlands) commissioned by the Antwerp School of Management (AMS). The research focussed on 86 higher education institutions which all subscribed to the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (UNPRME). It lead to the development of integrated CSR courses for AMS in cooperation with Prof. Luc Van Liedekerke, academic director of the BASF-Deloitte Chair on Sustainability.

Integrated Sustainability Management for HSEQ Managers

Sustenuto developed together with Prof. Luc Van Liedekerke, academic director of the BASF-Deloitte Chair on Sustainability,  a 2-day executive training program for the Antwerp Management School (AMS). The integrated course offers executive managers a multi-disciplinary perspective on environment, health, quality, safety and sustainability management. The course introduces a systemic approach for improving efficiency and effectiveness while incorporating sustainability issues. The course was established after a thorough European benchmark on CSR courses. The course was the first time conducted in the fall of 2013.

Quadrant, the CSR Learning Network

Over 300 entrepreneurs are passionate about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by Quadrant on the initiative of the Belgian Chambers of Commerce in cooperation with Sustenuto. With Quadrant, we apply the methodology of learning networks from Plato on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Each year, about 100 managers of SMEs across Belgium meet monthly together in small groups to learn about and work on CSR. The Quadrant learning networks have become a CSR platform of entrepreneurs and chambers of commerce that like to share their CSR experiences with others.

Understanding Corporate Responsibility. An executive briefing.

Project RESPONSE studies the the degree of alignment between companies and their stakeholders about what Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) entails. RESPONSE has been supported and funded by the EU Commission’s Directorate General (DG) Research and was conducted by a multi-disciplinary team of academic researchers from a consortium of leading business schools in Europe being Insead (France), Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi (Italy), the Leon Kozminski Academy of Entrepreneurship and Management (Poland), Impact - a training consultancy (Austria) and Sustenuto. The project was implemented through an innovative model of partnership between the European Academy for Business in Society (EABIS) member business schools and its corporate founding partners – IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Shell and Unilever. Results have been integrated in an executive briefing.

CSR in commodities

Jean-Luc Deleersnyder was appointed as  new CEO of the Sibelco Group in the spring of 2013. At the group level Sibelco stated its ambition to be a Leader in sustainability. The 5 regions within the group are facing the task to translate this vision into daily practice. Sustenuto supported the Corporate Sustainability Department in defining the challenges and developing a sustainability strategy and corresponding implementation approaches.

CSR in construction

Sustenuto guides Wienerberger in determining a sustainability strategy. Key questions that arise for Wienerberger are: What is Wienerberger’s vision on sustainability? What are the different scenarios in 10, 20 years and their consequences? And what are the ambitions and objectives in sustainability in those scenarios? The circular thinking on materials takes a crucial place. To what extent can Wienerberger reuse materials in their products. The scenarios are developed at three levels. The materials balance on a national and European scale, the materials cycle at the product level, in this case the brick and the evolution of product to building systems. The Sustenuto guidance leads to a management workshop where a shared vision is developed for the future.

CSR in mining

BIA provides over 100 years equipment in West and Central Africa for the mining and forestry sector. With a vision to become the preferred solution provider to shape a sustainable earth, BIA aims to build coherence in its activities at HQ. Sustenuto supported BIA in preparing HQ to be a fully sustainable operations center.

Sustainability Impact Assessment

This document offers a general introduction to sustainable impact assessment (SIA). SIA is an approach for exploring the combined economic, environmental and social impacts of a range of proposed policies, programmes, strategies and action plans. The document was commissioned by the OECD and aimed at increasing awareness of the potential of SIA for developing more sustainable policies, strategies and action plans within OECD member countries.

Preparing the circular economy in Europe

The C2C network brings together EU regions to share and capitalise on regional good practice in implementing C2C principles in relation to waste prevention and management, and do so by producing sustainable solutions, economic development opportunities and social well-being. The C2CN is an INTERREG IVC project awarded with a fast track status meaning that results will also contribute to the Europe 2020 strategy of the European Commission including their active participation. Sustenuto worked together with VITO (www.vito.be) to draft the C2C framework for the project. CSR Expert Report

Expert Report on the CSR developments and trends. This report outlines in five chapters the international and Belgian/Flemish trends in sustainable business. Nine propositions explain future challenges for further mainstreaming of CSR in Flanders. The report is mainly known for its infographics. The major international initiatives between 1968 and 2010 have been brought together in one timeline.

European cooperation on CSR

COGITA (Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility through Public Policy) is an interregional project, bringing together 13 regions covering the whole of Europe and a budget of over €2.5M, which promotes social and environmental responsibility within SMEs across Europe. Sustenuto was asked to facilitate one of the European conferences. 

Recommendations for building a circular economy

Sustenuto developed a Guide on C2C beyond waste management commissioned by the Cradle to Cradle Network, a project part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the INTERREG IVC programme under the Authority of the Province of Limburg (the Netherlands). This Guide provides insight in the major challenges Europe and its policies have for making the transition towards a society where waste has become resource. It is the cornerstone of the Cradle to Cradle Network INTERREG IV C project and builds on the experience of 10 regions in Europe, a Cradle to Cradle Framework and four perspective studies in the areas on industry, area spatial development, governance and the build industry. Just as these studies are not formal academic literature reviews, this Guide on C2C beyond waste management is also developed from a practical point of view with regard to policy makers. It contains 15 recommendations for building a circular economy.

CSR in automotive

Toyota Motor Europe asks Sustenuto to help develop a vision on strategic philanthropy, combined with a strong employee involvement. One of the principles that made ​​ Toyota big as a manufacturer plays a central role here. "Genchi genbutsu", loosely translated" building understanding of cause and effect as a basis for right proposals" or "go to the source to find the facts to make correct decisions and build consensus and trust". Toyota Motor Europe has already a strong program of community projects and also a lot of experience with involvement of employees. What’s essential in this project is to connect good practices and anchor them with the Toyota’s mission.

SMART Sustainable Public Procurement

In the framework of the strategic embedding of sustainable procurement for the city of Ghent, the European directive on sustainable purchasing SMART was applied. Two purchase segments are used as a pilot, printing and vehicles. One is Green Track, a pilot project carried out over a year with various organizations in the cultural sector in Ghent and SMART Mobility, the pilot project for the purchase of vehicles. A clear definition of the purchasing needs and consultation with the market are only two of the elements that thoroughly renew the purchasing process. Finally, a practical roadmap is provided which serves as a guide for the purchase of other categories of goods. 

CSR in textile

Bekaert Textiles provides 60,000 mattresses the appropriate textiles on a daily basis. Sustenuto works on two fronts together with Bekaert Textiles, in the context of innovation projects for a new concept based on the principles of circular economy for mattress and textile and also in shaping the overall sustainability strategy.

CSR scan - the next generation

Sustenuto is developing at present the next generation of CSR Scans. The number of b2b assessment is increasing dramatically over the last years. It looks like every client has its own assessment  model. This puts every organisation before the challenge to prepare itself towards questions such as how performant is your CSR? what are the CSR challenges? and also how can you improve? The online CSR Scan 2014 is developed in line with the latest trends, aligned with 26000 and GRI. It gives companies and all organisations the possibility to assess performance on implementation and management of CSR. The CSR Scan is constructed as a growth model with 300 declarations. Every declaration serves at the same time to assess CSR performance as it is exemplary for a possible action to take. There is only one thing that remains on the plate: test yourself!

Research for sustainable business

The European Academy for Business in Society (EABIS, at present www.abis-global.org) took shape in the midst of CSR Europe. Combining academic capacities with business experience gives excellent  breeding ground for in depth research on CSR. Sustenuto worked together with EABIS in shaping the first mega collaborative CSR research projects on European level.

Strategic embedding of sustainable procurement

"Sustainable procurement, the power of Ghent towards 2020", aims to convince the officers, directors and management teams of the city of the importance of strategic sustainable purchases. This is a master project where the City of Ghent wants to become an example consumer. The purchasing power of the City is not only a lever for sustainability, it also contributes to a more efficient policy. The results are presented at the Ecoprocura conference which takes place on 24-26 September 2014 in Ghent.

CSR and renewable energy

Hanssen Transmissions is a key player in the renewable energy sector building the gearbox for the wind mills. Sustenuto coached Hansen Transmissions implementing the SA8000 standard, providing a quality standard for improving sustainability and specifically labour relations and conditions in the workplace and the supply chain. Since 2011, Hansen Industrial Tranmissions became part of the Japanese Sumitomo Group.

CSR in the concrete industry

Sustenuto helps the Federation of the Belgian Precast Concrete Industry (FEBE) in their transition to a sustainable path. This direction is also underlined by a new baseline: 'precast concrete, durability put into shape’. Its 80 member companies manufacture and supply a wide range of products for the construction industry at large. Their common characteristic: all are manufactured in factory or workshop, in sequences or customized and delivered in final form to the user. Sustenuto also helps them in making their first sustainability report in the sector ​​in accordance with the GRI guidelines. 

CSR in banking

Reflection within the banking and insurance group Axa regarding their CSR strategy. Sustenuto acts as a sparring partner for the evaluation of the current strategy, operations and results, and secondly to determine future priorities and possible actions.

ISO 26000 and GRI in governmental organizations

ISO26000 was implemented in four federal ministries, the Federal Public Service (FPS) Economy, the FPS Finance, the FPS Social Security and the FPS Sustainable Development. Together, these administrations account for nearly 30,000 employees. Sustenuto developed the approach to apply the ISO 26000 standard on social responsibility. Sustenuto supported in parallel the four organisations in publishing their first sustainability report according to GRI.  The aim of the project was also to build capacity to share learnings and experiences and to examine how CSR can be applied to the whole of the organisation. The results are summarized in a report which was presented to the ISO 26000 conference in Geneva.

 

CSR in the Middle East

Sustenuto visited several managers from Besix in the Middle East (United Arab Emirates: Dubai and Abu Dhabi) to map the CSR challenges. With 10,000 workers of various nationalities, employed in giga-building projects such as the Burj Khalifa (tallest building in the world) and the Ferrari Challenge theme park, the challenges encountered are tremendous. Those efforts are part of a more structural approach to CSR at Besix. 

CSR Academy

Sustenuto is asked to organise a two-day CSR Academy on European level, in the follow-up of the success of the CSR learning network Quadrant. The CSR Academy aims to strengthen Chambers’ capacity to act as a CSR multiplier and advisor for their members. The CSR Academy is open to 25 Chambers (national, regional and local Chambers as well as their delegations in Brussels) from the 27 EU member states and candidate countries. The 2-day course is designed for executives and staff of EU Chambers of Commerce dealing with CSR or with specific CSR aspects (energy, environment, social integration, HR policy, international trade, corporate governance,…). The academy further focusses on how to implement CSR practices within SMEs and Chambers, with practical tools on CSR reporting, CSR scans, sustainability analysis, methods for raising CSR awareness, CSR communication and development of a CSR action plan. Co-creation with Business & Society Belgium

Co-creation with Business & Society Belgium. Sustenuto performs regularly interim assignments for Business & Society Belgium, the CSR business network in Belgium. The tasks range from the organization and supervision of workshops, surveys of professionals on CSR in their respective sector and co-creation with these actors to develop new approaches. A concrete example is a broad stakeholder consultation on the future mission of Business & Society Belgium. The following groups, CSR networks, media, NGOs and trade unions, academics and consultants were consulted through three roundtables. The themes being raised took into consideration the expectations of the stakeholders regarding the role, mission and services of Business & Society Belgium.

Sustainable Materials Management for Europe

This background study on Sustainable Materials Management has been commissioned by the Flemish government and serves as basis for the informal Environmental Council on the 12th and 13th of July 2010, as part of the Belgian Presidency of the EU during the second semester of 2010. The study builds the fundamentals for circular economy in Europe. The study is executed by a partnership of Sustenuto with the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy (Germany).
